Skeletal muscle is recognized as vital to physical movement, posture, and breathing. In a less appreciated but critically important role, skeletal muscle functions as metabolic and endocrine organ to orchestrate whole body metabolic homeostasis, immune response and neuronal activities. Such profound physiological functions of skeletal muscle are critical to ensure healthy and quality life in human. Skeletal muscle stem cells, also known satellite cells, play important roles in maintaining muscle tissue homeostasis during skeletal muscle regeneration and muscular disease. Therefore, it will lay broad physiological significances to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlining satellite cell quiescence, activation, proliferation, differentiation and self-renewal during muscle regeneration and muscular disease. Topics of the venues will focus on muscle stem cell function in regulating muscular dystrophy and sarcopenia disease. In particular, we will discuss the extrinsic signal (niche) and intrinsic factors in regulating satellite cell heterogeneity, quiescence vs activation, self-renewal vs differentiation, by genetic lineage tracing, metabolic tracing, single cell RNA sequencing and Hi-C technologies.
